Cairo Airport to Downtown: choose the right transfer
Compare app rides, airport limousines, taxis and buses from Cairo Airport to Downtown, with terminal-specific pickup checks and arrival tips.

For most first-time arrivals, the simplest choices are an app-booked ride or a transfer arranged with the hotel. Do not mistake the airport’s automated train for a connection to central Cairo: it links terminals and other facilities within the airport grounds, not the airport to Downtown.
“Downtown Cairo” is also too broad to use as a destination by itself. Before leaving arrivals, save the exact hotel pin and address. Tahrir Square, Talaat Harb Square and Ramses are distinct drop-off points, and similarly named hotels can be in different districts.
The options at a glance
| Option | Best for | Main check before using it |

| Uber | Independent visitors with mobile data | Follow the live pickup directions for your terminal |
| Pre-arranged hotel or private transfer | Late arrivals, families, larger groups and first visits | Confirm the terminal, meeting point, waiting time and total price |
| Airport limousine | A fixed-price car arranged on arrival | Confirm the destination, vehicle class and price before departure |
| Metered white taxi | Travellers comfortable coordinating at the curb | Confirm that the meter will be used |
| City bus | Light luggage, daytime travel and flexible plans | Verify the route, fare and last service at the Terminal 1 bus station |
Uber: the practical app option
Uber supports pickups at Cairo International Airport and says the price shown depends on the pickup, destination, ride type and current conditions. Request through the app and follow the directions displayed after a driver accepts the trip (Uber’s CAI pickup guide).
Its current published terminal instructions are specific:
- Terminal 2: leave through Gate 7 and use the curbside pickup zone outside it.
- Terminal 3: go to the B6 parking space in the car park.
- Terminal 1: Uber’s published guide does not show an equivalent fixed meeting point. Use the location and walking instructions in the app rather than assuming an exit.
Pickup arrangements can change, so in-app directions should take precedence over a saved screenshot or old travel post. Check the number plate, vehicle and driver against the booking before getting in. Uber also warns passengers not to accept off-app offers from solicitors in the terminal or pickup zones.
Enter the hotel—not merely “Downtown Cairo”—as the destination. If it is on a narrow or access-controlled street, ask reception whether there is a better vehicle entrance or nearby landmark. Keep a screenshot of the hotel name and address, preferably including the Arabic version, in case mobile service drops.
There is no dependable fixed app fare to publish. Check the live amount after collecting your bags. Choose the vehicle for the luggage as well as the passenger count; Uber says cargo space varies by vehicle and is not guaranteed.
Pre-arranged transfer: a defined meeting plan
A transfer booked through the hotel can reduce uncertainty after a late flight or when several people and suitcases need to travel together. It may also suit a family that has confirmed an appropriate child restraint in advance.
Ask for written confirmation of:
- the total price, currency and payment method;
- whether parking and waiting are included;
- the arrival terminal and exact meeting point;
- whether the operator monitors the flight number;
- how long the driver waits after landing;
- a contact number that works on WhatsApp or by ordinary call;
- the vehicle size and luggage capacity;
- any required child restraint.
Send the operating flight number, not only the airline and scheduled arrival time. Cairo Airport has Terminals 1, 2 and 3, and some airlines use more than one. Uber’s airport directory likewise advises checking the flight because terminal assignments can vary (CAI airline and terminal guidance).
Airport limousine: fixed by destination and vehicle class
Cairo International Airport says limousine pickup points are curbside in front of the terminals. Prices are fixed according to destination and vehicle category. Its listed categories include luxury cars, microbuses for up to seven passengers, midsize cars and London taxis (Cairo Airport ground-transport guide).
Before accepting a car, show the precise Downtown address and ask for the total price in Egyptian pounds. Confirm the vehicle category, whether any extra charge applies and whether you will receive a receipt or booking slip. “Downtown” alone is not a sufficient fare agreement.
This is an option when mobile data is unavailable but you want a destination-based price established before departure.
Street taxi: distinguish metered from negotiated
The airport’s guidance distinguishes older black-and-white taxis, which generally have no meter and require a fare negotiated before travel, from white taxis with meters. It also cautions that independent drivers may approach travellers in the arrivals hall (Cairo Airport ground-transport guide).
For a white taxi, establish before loading the bags that the meter will be switched on. For a non-metered taxi, agree the complete fare and currency first, including whether there are any extra charges.
A taxi does not provide the same in-app trip record as an app booking. Keep the hotel pin and address available rather than relying on a verbal description of the destination.
Public bus: verify the service at Terminal 1
The airport says city buses depart from the bus station in the parking area in front of Terminal 1 only. Its public transport page does not give route numbers, Downtown stops, frequencies, operating hours or fares (Cairo Airport ground-transport guide). Do not build a time-sensitive arrival plan around a route number copied from an undated guide.
At the Terminal 1 bus station, ask staff to confirm:
- the bus number and final destination;
- whether it serves Tahrir, Abdel Moneim Riad or another useful Downtown stop;
- whether a change is required;
- the fare and accepted payment method;
- the last service and expected wait;
- whether your luggage can be accommodated.
The bus is most practical with light baggage, during the day and without a tight check-in deadline. A stop described only as being in “Cairo” may still require another bus, Metro trip or taxi to reach the hotel.
Passengers landing at Terminals 2 or 3 must first get to the Terminal 1 bus station. The airport says its free Automated People Mover links Terminal 1, Air Mall, the car park, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, with an end-to-end journey of no more than five minutes. The same page lists 18 operating hours per day and six hours for maintenance, so do not assume it will be running after a late arrival (Cairo Airport Automated People Mover).
The People Mover remains within the airport grounds. It is not a Cairo Metro service to Downtown.
